Shopify Fee Structure

Net Revenue = Order Value ? Credit Card Processing Fee ? Transaction Fee (if external processor)

Shopify charges two separate fees depending on your plan and payment processor:

Plan Monthly Fee Shopify Payments External Processor
Basic$392.9% + 30x+2% txn fee
Shopify$1052.6% + 30x+1% txn fee
Advanced$3992.4% + 30x+0.5% txn fee

Example

Order Value$100
PlanShopify ($105/mo)
Credit Card Fee (2.6% + $0.30)?$2.90
Transaction Fee (Shopify Payments)$0.00
Net Revenue$97.10
Effective Fee Rate = 2.90%

Using Shopify Payments eliminates the additional transaction fee. For 200 orders/month at $100 average: Shopify plan monthly fee ($105) is quickly offset vs. Basic plan's higher processing rate on higher volumes.

How to Reduce Shopify Fees

Shopify fees are a fixed cost of doing business on the platform, but there are clear strategies to minimize their impact and choose the most cost-effective plan for your revenue level.

1. Use Shopify Payments

The single most impactful fee reduction is using Shopify Payments instead of a third-party processor. On the Basic plan, using an external processor adds a 2% transaction fee on every order x on top of your processor's own fees. For a store doing $10,000/month, that's $200/month extra, or $2,400/year. If you're eligible for Shopify Payments (available in most major markets), there's almost never a reason to use an external processor for the majority of transactions.

2. Upgrade Your Plan at the Right Revenue Threshold

The Shopify plan ($105/mo) saves 0.3% in credit card processing vs. Basic ($39/mo). The plan cost difference is $66/month. Break-even: $66 / 0.003 = $22,000/month in revenue. If your monthly revenue exceeds $22,000 and you use Shopify Payments, the Shopify plan pays for itself in processing savings. Apply the same logic to Advanced: break-even vs. Shopify plan is ($399?$105) / 0.002 = $147,000/month.

3. Offer Discounts for Digital or Bank Payments

Credit card processing fees are paid by the merchant. Some businesses pass this cost to customers via a small surcharge for card payments (where legally permitted) or offer a discount for bank transfer/ACH payments. ACH payments typically cost 0.5-1.5% vs. 2.5-3% for cards x significant savings at high volume.

4. Reduce Chargebacks

Chargebacks cost you the disputed amount plus a $15 chargeback fee. High chargeback rates can also risk your Shopify Payments account. Reduce chargebacks with: clear product descriptions that set accurate expectations, proactive customer service before disputes escalate, fraud detection apps (Shopify Protect or third-party), and prompt responses to all customer inquiries.

5. Consider Annual Billing

Shopify offers a discount for annual billing x approximately 25% savings vs. monthly. At $105/month, the Shopify plan on monthly billing costs $1,260/year. Annual billing costs approximately $948. That's $312/year saved x essentially getting almost 3 months free. Pay annually if you're committed to the platform for the long term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shopify charges an additional transaction fee only when you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.5% on Advanced. If you use Shopify Payments, the transaction fee is waived x you only pay the credit card processing rate (2.9%, 2.6%, or 2.4% + $0.30 depending on plan).
Start with Basic until your monthly revenue exceeds ~$22,000 x at that point the Shopify plan's lower processing rate saves more than the extra $66/month plan cost. Upgrade to Advanced when monthly revenue exceeds ~$147,000 (using Shopify Payments). For enterprise-level volume, explore Shopify Plus (starts ~$2,000/month) which offers 0.15-0.30% processing rates.
With Shopify Payments, when you issue a full refund you get back the transaction fee but not the credit card processing fee (the 2.9% + $0.30 component). For partial refunds, fees are adjusted proportionally. This means refunds still cost you in processing fees x another reason to minimize return rates through accurate product listings.
PayPal is technically a third-party processor, so using it as your primary payment method incurs Shopify's transaction fee (2%, 1%, or 0.5%). However, Shopify and PayPal have a partnership x PayPal Express Checkout is treated as a native integration on Shopify Payments-enabled stores, which may waive the transaction fee. Check your specific Shopify account settings to confirm.
Shopify fees (credit card processing at ~2.6-2.9%) are significantly lower than Amazon's total fees (referral fee 15% + FBA fulfillment fee). The tradeoff: Amazon provides traffic and fulfillment infrastructure; Shopify requires you to drive your own traffic. Most successful brands use both x Amazon for discovery/volume, Shopify DTC for higher-margin repeat purchases from loyal customers.
